Tech Tip: The Essentials

For First Time Users of Clamp On (... and a reminder for the savvy who forget the basics!)

Getting a weak signal with your Cypress or Orcas? It’s usually one of a few simple setup steps.

With the meter on the outside of the pipe, be sure to define your measurement parameters and check the mechanical installation. These are easy to overlook—but just as easy to fix.

Here’s the short list to make sure you have squared away each time you use your meter:

  • Verify outer diameter, wall thickness, and material of your pipe.

  • Verify fluid properties. Water? Glycol? Fuels? Fluid temp?

  • Is the meter strapped down to the pipe snug? It’s not necessary to cinch down on the mounting straps very hard, just snug so the meter stays put.

  • Are the transducers spaced correctly according to the app recommendation and pressing on the pipe? The distance is face to face and printed on the mounting rail.

  • Is there a dab of coupling gel (for portable measuring) or are the coupling pads installed? This is a very common oversight!

  • If installed in single traverse, are the transducers 180 degrees apart? Placing at three and nine o’clock, plus using the level app in your smart device ensures correct positioning.

  • If configured in reflect positioning (transducers on same side of pipe), does the spacing match the configuration?

  • On a horizontal pipe, mount on any plane except the 6&12 clock positions.

  • Is the pipe full? This is more common than you think!

Usually these small steps resolve the measurement issue and you’ll be on your way.
